West Side Manhattan Transitway Study
نویسنده
چکیده
J n response to the current and anticipated changes in the type and intensity of land use activities on Manhattan's West Side, the New York City Department of City Planning is conducting the West Side Transitway Study to ensure that adequate transportation services are in place to serve the new workers, residents, and visitors. The study, funded by the UMTA, is a four-phase effort that is examining potential transportation problems created by the anticipated developments, defining the degree to which improvements are needed, and determining the feasibility of implementing and operating new transit services and facilities to solve the identified problems. Because current sources of funding for public transportation are fully committed to the operation, rehabilitation, and upgrading of New York City's existing systems, innovative methods for financing and implementing the recommended improvements are being explored. This paper summarizes the first three phases of the study's transportation component. The existing transportation conditions in the study area are explored along with the future problems and needs created by the new development. The type of transportation improvement alternatives developed, primarily light rail transit (LRT) options, and specific issues related to reinstituting LRT in a dense urban environment such as Manhattan are described. In addition, issues related to privatization of the project implementation and operation are reviewed.

Invited commentary: Considering bias in the assessment of respiratory symptoms among residents of Lower Manhattan following the events of September 11, 2001.
The report by Lin et al. (1) in this issue of the Journal presents data on past-year and past-month respiratory symptoms among residents of Lower Manhattan after the September 11, 2001, attack on and collapse of the World Trade Center, as compared with residents of Manhattan’s Upper West Side. Residents of both areas were surveyed 8–16 months after the attack. The recorded frequency of symptoms...
متن کاملTransitway An Innovation in Public Transportation BY MOHAMMAD NISAR AND ATA
Cost-effective public transit options suitable for serving all demand levels include: bus service in mixed traffic, bus service in reserved lane, transitway/buswdy, light rail transit (LRT) (segregated right of way), intermediate capacity advanced light rail transit (ALRT), and heavy rail rapid transit. This classification of transit options takes into account right-of-way access (that is, mixe...
متن کاملA new operation on digraphs : the Manhattan product
We give a formal definition of a new product of bipartite digraphs, the Manhattan product, and we study some of its main properties. It is shown that if all the factors of the above product are (directed) cycles, then the digraph obtained is a Manhattan street network. To this respect, it is proved that many properties of these networks, such as high symmetries and the presence of Hamiltonian c...
متن کاملThe Manhattan product of digraphs
We study the main properties of a new product of bipartite digraphs which we call Manhattan product. This product allows us to understand the subjacent product in the Manhattan street networks and can be used to built other networks with similar good properties. It is shown that if all the factors of such a product are (directed) cycles, then the digraph obtained is a Manhattan street network, ...
متن کاملAn approach to rank efficient DMUs in DEA based on combining Manhattan and infinity norms
In many applications, discrimination among decision making units (DMUs) is a problematic technical task procedure to decision makers in data envelopment analysis (DEA). The DEA models unable to discriminate between extremely efficient DMUs. Hence, there is a growing interest in improving discrimination power in DEA yet. The aim of this paper is ranking extreme efficient DMUs in DEA based on exp...
